Don't Waste Your Time

Dear Loving people,

William Shakespeare, the much celebrated English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist says in his book - Venus and AdonisMake use of time, let not advantage slip”. I wanted to dwell on it today but then, I came across an interesting article “Make Use of Time” by Ashwani Kumar - a politician from the Indian National Congress party, and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Planning. I have adapted the article for your self-edification, read on…

One of the most valuable things on earth is TIME. Everything is acquired in time; all of man's business is conducted by time. You could have food, clothing, fabulous homes, wisdom - have all you want, but if you do not have time, it means - you have nothing. Unfortunately, this is a lesson many Africans don’t yet know and are not willing to learn. The sordid concept of ‘Blackman Time’ so common in Africa says it all. On the other side, one of the worst things to happen to a man on earth is the loss of time. When you waste time, you can’t achieve anything; by losing time, you lose absolutely everything including yourself.

Unfortunately for the human race, time is the least valued, as a matter of fact, it’s the most misspent thing on earth. A majority of people live their lives as if they were doing an outrageous speculation, according to the accepted custom, not the least troubled about what they did with their  days  and  years  or  how  they  lived  their  lives. Sometimes we mourn over the loss of some existing bits, but we have no regrets at all, nor are we sorry, when we thoughtlessly lose not just some petty cash, but the most precious minutes of our time.

“I did not have the time”; a phrase we hear often, words we often use to justify our failures, our lack of effort to go after our dreams, words we use to justify all things not done. Many of us complain that life is unfair, that we are not born rich; there are no opportunities around us. We blame lack of money, lack of contacts and lack of resources as the reasons for not succeeding or not even starting.

You must not forget that time and not money is your greatest resource. Each individual has only 24 hours allotted to him/her each day. There might be a lot of differences between individuals with regard to money, culture and background but when it comes to time everyone is given the same quantity. In this, life shows that it is fair; it shows that nature and God do not distinguish between rich or poor. Everyone has the same amount of time.

Within the time available, few people go on to become a huge success accomplishing a lot of things in the process while many of us barely get on with our lives. A proper utilization of the time can offset the inequalities imposed by birth or by any other reason.

Your greatest advantage, resource and asset is time. Do not throw it away; do not let it slip away. Do not merely spend it, but use it efficiently and effectively to a good purpose. Many of us give the impression of being busy; we are busy in a lot of fruitless activities, in wasting time. Think about it, you might be busy but are you really accomplishing something, are you doing something worthwhile.

Do not complain that you have no time or time is short, there is enough time if you utilize it correctly and know what you are doing.

Wake up! And start living.

The Frog at the Bottom of the Well

Dear loving people,

Permit me to speak to your inner person this morning. Take a few minutes to reflect with me down these thought provoking lines. Here we go…

How often do you think too small, how often do you allow yourself to endure the underserved pain of selling yourself too short? How often have you abandoned the struggle just a stone’s throw to the finish-line?

Students have abandoned school just a few weeks to their final exams; athletes have abandoned the race just a few steps to finishing, I once gave up just a day before success was to be pronounced in a project I undertook.

Mao Zedong, commonly referred to as Chairman Mao (December 26, 1893 – September 9, 1976), was a Chinese Communist revolutionary, guerrilla warfare strategist, anti-imperialist political philosopher, and leader of the Chinese Revolution. He was the architect and founding father of the People's Republic of China from its establishment in 1949, and held authoritarian control over the nation until his death in 1976. His theoretical contribution to Marxism–Leninism, along with his military strategies and brand of policies, are collectively known as Maoism.

My intention is not to talk about his life and achievements but out of all the things he said and did, I pick out the following statement that he made which is to me, a dictum for any success oriented personality.

“We think too small. Like the frog at the bottom of the well. He thinks the sky is only as big as the top of the well. If he surfaced, he would have an entirely different view”

Wao!! What a saying and how does this translate to us today? That you should change your views, jump out of your little well of countless stereotypes and discover what the universe of opportunities and possibilities you still have before you. Even if you are not willing, you can be willing to learn to be willing.

Even if you are nothing today, trust me, you can be something tomorrow.

Volunteer With Living Lectures

Dear lovely people,

Today, I am moved to call your good nature to action. Living Lectures is about moving onto a new level! For this to happen, we need YOU. Mahatma Ghandi said “Those who want to do good are not selfish. They are not in a hurry. They know that to impregnate people with good requires a long time. But evil has wings. To build a house takes time. Its destruction takes none.” We need VOLUNTEES to be able to take this giant step.

Living Lectures as we all know is bringing a new dimension to personality development, relaxation, recreation and consequentially better health (wellbeing) in line with what Johnnetta B. Cole said “The best response to the long list of social ills is to put into effect the Noah principle.  That is, stop looking for credit for predicting the rain; it’s time to start building an ark.”

We need people like you to volunteer as members of an Organizing team that will plan and manage a series of launching/fundraising events for Living Lectures.

Permit me to quote Johnnetta B. Cole again who said “The ultimate expression of generosity is not in giving of what you have, but in giving of who you are.” Willingly volunteering your know-how and time for this course is a step in living this dream.

Living Lectures is faced with this gargantuan task and like Johnnetta B. Cole continues to say “Faced with what seems like an impossible task, a group of folks will do well to remember the African proverb:  When spider webs unite they can tie up a lion.”

We want to tie up this lion that is the lunching/fundraising for Living Lectures. Are you willing to be part of the spider web? “Some things are fully worth doing even if you know the final product will be far short of perfect:  write a poem, sing in the shower, greet someone in their language instead of your own.” Johnnetta B. Cole keeps on.

Living Lectures is about singing a new song not only in the shower but equally in the rains. How edifying and consoling it will be if you decided NOW to be part of that melodious choir.

Start Now, VOLUNTEER with us.
